LEAPMOTOR — B05 UK LAUNCH

THE LEAPMOTOR ARCADE

Performance Communications needed to launch a car most of the UK had never heard of, so we turned Ministry of Sound into a retro arcade for 187 guests and watched the content reach 24.7 million people.

OVERVIEW

BEHIND THE SCENES

When Performance Communications, who we first worked with on the Nissan Concept 20-23 launch, brought us the brief for Leapmotor’s B05, we knew straight away it was going to be a special one. Leapmotor is a young electric car brand that’s new to the UK, and the B05 is the most eye-catching car in its line-up. Rather than a traditional press launch, PC wanted to put it in front of influencers and lifestyle creators, and the brief, which came up on nearly every call, was simply to make the brand look cool.

An open, creative brief like that gave us room to show what we can really do. We brought in ideas from events we’ve run and events we’ve been to, suppliers we talk to every week and the trends we keep an eye on, and the PC team were every bit as keen to push the boundaries. Together we built the Leapmotor Arcade at Ministry of Sound in London on 20 August 2026: two B05s, a working arcade, an LED dance floor, a 360 selfie platform, a photo booth, diner-style food and a merch shop, with a super-exclusive family-only session in the afternoon and the main launch party in the evening.

Leapmotor had never run a launch like this in the UK, so a big part of our job was being the people who had. We advised on everything from keeping electric cars charged and in show mode at an event to delivery slots, drivers and exactly where each car would sit.

It also landed in the middle of summer, when most corporate work goes quiet, which made it a proper, meaty project to get our teeth into. Our founder Sarah Threlfall took a planned holiday part-way through, and her right-hand woman Sarah Stanyer stepped in. PC told us afterwards they’d hardly noticed the switch between the two Sarahs, and Sarah T was back in time for the build and the night itself.

BRIEF

MAKE THE BRAND LOOK COOL

Leapmotor wanted the UK to know its name, and PC’s plan was to get there through creators rather than the press. They set a target of 30 influencers and a reach of two million, and made the case to Leapmotor that an influencer event would deliver more than a traditional media launch could. That meant the event had to look good through a phone camera above everything else, because every guest was there to make content.

The budget was conservative for something this ambitious, and it stayed fixed. As the scope grew and everyone’s ambitions grew with it, there was no extra money, so every decision went back to the objective. If something would put more eyeballs on the B05, it stayed. If it was window dressing for its own sake, it came out. That discipline is a big part of why the event never looked or felt as if it had been built to a budget.

CHALLENGES

GETTING TWO CARS INTO A NIGHTCLUB

The cars worried us most from the start. We looked at more than 20 venues across London, Brighton and Manchester, and most of them fell at the same hurdle: getting two vehicles inside while leaving room for everything else. Ministry of Sound had the space as well as the name, but fitting the B05s into the courtyard exactly where the branding needed them meant we couldn’t rely on CAD drawings alone. We persuaded the venue that a test run was in their interest too, and everyone spent a day on site moving the car and the layout around in real time. It was worth every minute, because the only way to know how it would look through a creator’s phone was to stand there and look.

Behind the fun sat some properly complicated logistics. There was a long list of suppliers and access was tight, so the load-in and load-out schedule had to be managed very carefully. We dealt with the council over parking suspensions, worked alongside the venue, AV and branding teams, and handled the automotive side, from deliveries and drivers to positioning.

With pressure coming from every direction, communication was what held it all together. Alongside scheduled and ad hoc calls, we created and ran a playbook that recorded every element as it was discussed, visualised, priced and signed off. It became the single source of truth for everyone involved, and PC told us it let them focus on the fine detail instead of worrying about the bigger picture.

SCOPE

AN ARCADE BUILT FOR THE CAMERA

VENUE & CAR POSITIONING

We searched more than 20 venues in three cities before securing Ministry of Sound, then ran site visits and a dedicated car-positioning day so the cars, branding and build all sat exactly where the cameras needed them.

THE ARCADE BUILD

Arcade machines with a communal leaderboard, an LED dance floor, a 360 selfie platform, a photo booth and seating, each placed and then adjusted on site for how it would look on camera. The leaderboard turned into a proper competition, with the winning score roughly ten times the runner-up’s.

FOOD, MUSIC & THE MERCH SHOP

Diner-style catering, with popcorn and ice cream that gave the courtyard a fairground feel the moment you walked in, and a saxophonist and DJ in sequins who were happy to pose for selfies and built the room into a full launch party. Instead of handing everyone the same goodie bag, we set the merch up as a shop where guests swapped arcade tokens for the pieces they actually wanted, all designed to look good enough to wear and colour-matched to the B05’s distinctive paint.

LOGISTICS & ON-SITE MANAGEMENT

EV charging and show mode, vehicle deliveries and drivers, council parking suspensions and a tightly managed load-in and load-out for every supplier. On the day we were on our feet from 7am until after midnight, handling every change and request as it came.

OUTCOME

MORE THAN TEN TIMES THE TARGET REACH

PC set a target of 30 influencers and a reach of two million. In the end 110 influencers posted 247 pieces of content, more people posted than had been formally invited, and the reach stood at 24.7 million when we sat down for the debrief, still climbing. Guests have been wearing the merch in their content ever since, which keeps the Leapmotor name in front of new audiences long after the night itself.

On the night, 187 guests came through the doors. With paparazzi outside, the queue was long enough to create some FOMO without keeping anyone waiting, and we stepped in to speed it up whenever it started to build. Inside, the room felt packed and buzzing, and the DJ and saxophonist built it into exactly the launch party PC had pictured.

Leapmotor’s MD, who we were told has very high standards, was over the moon, and told PC afterwards that he couldn’t think of a single thing that could have been done better. For a young brand launching its most distinctive car, it showed that a creator-led event can outperform a far bigger media spend, and the conversation about what comes next has already started.

“You’ve been the easiest events team I’ve ever worked with, just a dream. Organised, not stressed. Everything was so organised, going through the playbook, every call – it meant I could focus on the details, the really nitty-gritty minutiae things, rather than worrying about anything bigger.”
